World's Shortest man and woman meet for the first time.

Guinnessworldrecords.com can today reveal a sneak preview of the 57th edition of the world's best-selling copyright book, Guinness World Records 2013, with these exclusive pictures and video of the world's Shortest Man, Chandra Bahadur Dangi (54.6 cm), and the world's Shortest Woman, Jyoti Amge (62.8 cm), who met for the first time for the production of the new book.
The historic moment was recorded earlier this year and is the first time in history the shortest male and female in the world have met. Each wore traditional outfits from their native countries and smiled and laughed throughout.
To add scale to the picture, the classic Guinness World Records book - which measures 1ft tall (30cm) - was placed in between them.
Chandra Bahadur Dangi and Jyoti Amge
Marco Frigatti, Official Guinness World Records Adjudicator, who also took part in the shoot, said: "It was an extraordinary moment; they're both such incredible individuals. Everyone knew this was a special moment, the atmosphere was magical."
The picture and new footage coincides with the recent announcement that the world's Shortest Woman, Jyoti Amge, will visit the UK on the 13th of September to help launch the new Guinness World Records 2013 book.
Jyoti, from Nagpur, India, took the title of Shortest Living Woman when she reached the age of 18 in December last year.
She has a form of dwarfism called Achondroplasia and won't grow any taller than her current height. Due to her size, she has to have clothes and jewellery specially made. She sleeps in a tiny bed and uses special plates and cutlery to eat.  She loves fashion and make-up and is currently pursuing her dream of becoming successful actress in the movie business.  She has already starred in a number of Indian films.
Jyoti said: "Since being recognised by Guinness World Records I have been able to visit lots of different countries. I love travelling. I have visited Japan and parts of Europe and now I can't wait to visit the UK."
In February this year, Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal made headlines across the globe when he was crowned the world's Shortest Man, standing at 54.6 cm (21.5 in).  His size also meant that he inherited the title of Shortest Man in history, breaking the previous record of India's Gul Mohammed (1957-97) who was 57 cm (22.5 in) tall.
Chandra is 72 years old and weighs 14.5 kg (31 lb 15 oz). Until the recent record announcement, he had spent his entire life in the remote Nepalese mountain village of Rhimkholi, about 250 miles west of Kathmandu. He said: "I'm very happy that I'm being recognized by Guinness World Records and that my name will be written in a book.  It's a big thing for my family, my village and my country.  I am very happy."

The latest edition of the world's best-selling copyright book was first published in 1955 and has sold over 120 million copies to date in over 100 countries. Unbelievable true facts-II

HOW COMPANIES GOT THEIR NAMES?

Adobe: This came from the name of the river Adobe Creek that ran behind the house of founder John Warnock.

CISCO: It is not an acronym as popularly believed. It's short for San Francisco.

Compaq: This name was formed by using COMP, for computer and PAQ to denote a small integral object.

Corel: The name was derived from the founder's name Dr. Michael Cowpland. It stands for COwpland Research Laboratory.

Hewlett Packard: Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard tossed a coin to decide whether the company they founded would be called Hewlett-Packard or Packard-Hewlett.

Intel: Bob Noyce and Gordon Moore wanted to name their new company 'Moore Noyce' but that was already trademarked by a hotel chain so they had to settle for an acronym of INTegrated ELectronics.

Lotus (Notes): Mitch Kapor got the name for his company from 'The Lotus Position' or 'Padmasana'. Kapor used to be a teacher of transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Microsoft: Coined by Bill Gates to represent the company that was devoted to MICROcomputer SOFTware. Originally christened Micro-Soft, the '-' was removed later on.

Motorola: Founder Paul Galvin came up with this name when his company started manufacturing radios for cars. The popular radio company at the time was called Victrola.

Sony: It originated from the Latin word 'sonus' meaning sound and 'sonny' as lang used by Americans to refer to a bright youngster.

SUN: Founded by 4 Stanford University buddies, SUN is the acronym for Stanford University Network. Andreas Bechtolsheim built a microcomputer; Vinod Khosla recruited him and Scott McNealy to manufacture computers based on it, and Bill Joy to develop a UNIX-based OS for the computer.

Apache: It got its name because its founders got started by applying patches to code written for NCSA's httpd daemon. The result was 'A PAtCHy' server - thus, the name Apache Jakarta (project from Apache): A project constituted by SUN and Apache to create a web server handling servlets and JSPs. Jakarta was name of the conference room at SUN where most of the meetings between SUN and Apache took place.

Tomcat: The servlet part of the Jakarta project. Tomcat was the code name for the JSDK 2.1 project inside SUN.

C: Dennis Ritchie improved on the B programming language and called it 'New B'. He later called it C. Earlier B was created by Ken Thompson as a revision of the Bon programming language (named after his wife Bonnie).
C++: Bjarne Stroustrup called his new language 'C with Classes' and then 'newC'. Because of which the original C began to be called 'old C' which was considered insulting to the C community. At this time Rick Mascitti suggested the name C++ as a successor to C.

GNU: A species of African antelope. Founder of the GNU project Richard Stallman liked the name because of the humour associated with its pronunciation and was also influenced by the children's song 'The Gnu Song' which is a song sung by a gnu. Also it fitted into the recursive acronym culture with 'GNU's Not Unix'.

Java: Originally called Oak by creator James Gosling, from the tree that stood outside his window, the programming team had to look for a substitute as there was no other language with the same name. Java was selected from a list of suggestions. It came from the name of the coffee that the programmers drank.

LG: Combination of two popular Korean brands Lucky and Goldstar.
Linux: Linus Torvalds originally used the Minix OS on his system which here placed by his OS. Hence the working name was Linux (Linus' Minix). He thought the name to be too egotistical and planned to name it Freax (free+freak+x). His friend Ari Lemmke encouraged Linus to upload it to a network so it could be easily downloaded. Ari gave Linus a directory called 'Linux' on his FTP server, as he did not like the name Freax. (Linus parents named him after two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling).

Mozilla: When Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, created a browser to replace Mosaic (also developed by him), it was named Mozilla (Mosaic-Killer, Godzilla). The marketing guys didn't like the name however and it was re-christened Netscape Navigator.

Red Hat: Company founder Marc Ewing was given the Cornell lacrosse team cap (with red and white stripes) while at college by his grandfather. He lost it and had to search for it desperately. The manual of the beta version of Red Hat Linux had an appeal to readers to return his Red Hat if found by anyone!

SAP: "Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing", formed by 4 ex-IBM employees who used to work in the 'Systems/Applications/Projects' group of IBM.

UNIX: When Bell Labs pulled out of MULTICS (MULTiplexed Information and Computing System), which was originally a joint Bell/GE/MIT project, Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie of Bell Labs wrote a simpler version of the OS. They needed the OS to run the game 'Space War' which was compiled under MULTICS. It was called UNICS - UNIplexed operating and Computing System by Brian Kernighan. It was later shortened to UNIX.

SCO (UNIX): From Santa Cruz Operation. The company's office was in Santa Cruz.

Xerox: The inventor, Chestor Carlson, named his product trying to say 'dry' (as it was dry copying, markedly different from the then prevailing wet copying). The Greek root 'xer' means dry.

Yahoo: The word was invented by Jonathan Swift and used in his book 'Gulliver's Travels'. It represents a person who is repulsive in appearance and action and is barely human. Yahoo! founders Jerry Yang and David Filo selected the name because they considered themselves yahoos.
3M: Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company started off by mining the material corundum used to make sandpaper. It was changed to 3M when the company changed its focus to Innovative Products.

Future concept---> NOKIA

Posted by Varatha krishnan On 0 comments
Nokia is planning to issue their awesome innovative mobile Nokia MORPH.

This mobile is a total package of unbelievable technology and is totally made by nano products.

Nokia says " Morph is a concept, demonstrating some of the possibilities that nanotechnologies might enable in future communication devices "

On looking at the video released on basis of this concept, we can see that a flat looking bluetooth headset is attached to the mobile and it can be detached from the mobile for calling. This may look ordinary but the video shows that when the headset is removed, the calling menu goes along with BT headset and the mobile can be operated at the same time as usual.

It also compares and shows that 10000 nano transistors can fit in single hair of an fly.

It also has a sensing app which senses the properties of materials by using a nano sensors. The video shows the sensing of an apple whether it is safe to eat or it needs washing etc., It can also detect some chemical components in air.

Nano scale glasses are used for charging and it acts like solar panels!!

It also has self cleaning property, which is a main characteristic of nano materials. this makes it extremely dirt repellent and also towards liquids.!!

Due to the presence of nano fibers and spider silk in it it is bendable and stretchable. It can be modified to any shape required. This mobile is wore as a watch and the amazing feature is it asks whether to lock the shape or not.

It also have haptic surface and the buttons are real 3D.

It is also made of transparent electronics which helps us to view the background while operating the mobile.

Nokia states that this is wearable device.!

Cambridge nano science center and Nokia research center are collaborated to invent this device.

The normal specifications like camera, resolution, etc are not provided yet.

But still it is expected to release only in 2021.:(

How Famous Companies Got Their Names?

Nike: Named for the greek goddess of victory. The swoosh symbolises her flight.

Skype: The original concept was ‘Sky-Peer-to-Peer’, which morphed into Skyper, then Skype.

Mercedes: This was actually financier's daughter's name.

Apple Computers: It was the favourite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three months late for filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company Apple Computers if the other colleagues didn't suggest a better name by 5 o'clock.

Google: The name started as a joke boasting about the amount of information the search-engine would be able to search. It was originally named 'Googol', a word for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. After founders - Stanford graduate students Sergey Brin and Larry Page presented their project to an angel investor; they received a cheque made out to 'Google'. So, instead of returning the cheque for correction, they decided to change the name to Google.

Hotmail: Founder Jack Smith got the idea of accessing e-mail via the web from a computer anywhere in the world. When Sabeer Bhatia came up with the business plan for the mail service, he tried all kinds of names ending in 'mail' and finally settled for hotmail as it included the letters "html" - the programming language used to write web pages. It was initially referred to as HoTMaiL with selective uppercasing.

Alva- New bulb innovation

Posted by Varatha krishnan On 0 comments

The light from Alva is sufficiently bright to read, but is not bright enough to hurt one’s eyes. Though several lighting firms still sell reproductions of those early Edison bulbs, they are too bright to look at.

The Alva light bulb is a lamp that is entirely hand-crafted and assembled. The lamp is 17.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches wide and it basically consists of three parts: a ceramic base, a glass bulb and the filament. The ceramic base and the glass bulb are made by experts and the filament is shaped by Anderson himself. All the three are then assembled by hand into a finished lamp.
One interesting feature of this lamp is that the LED light bulb used in this also helps in keeping the lamp cool, keeping it from heating up. Also, if the LED bulb needs to be changed, it can easily be done by just undoing three screws.

The innovation has reached its pledged goal of $4000 and it is believed that the project will take of in August this year. We are waiting eagerly for this wonderful innovation to enter the market and prove its mettle!

Uncorruptable glass chip

Posted by Varatha krishnan On 0 comments

Hitachi, the Japanese multinational has come out with a technique that allows data to last forever and not degrade. Hitachi, in fact claims that it can preserve information for hundreds of millions of years. "

The technology utilizes a high precision laser that embeds information in the form of microscopic dots across a piece of quartz glass. The information is in the binary form in these microscopic dots. Once the dots are applied, any person wishing to read data from the glass chip can easily do so by just using an optical microscope. The optical microscope should be paired with a computer that is capable of deciphering the data imprinted on the glass chip.

The Chip is basically a square whose side measures two centimetres (0.8 inches) and is 2 millimetres thick.  The glass chip is capable of storing up to four layers of dots and currently has a memory capacity of 40 MB per square inch. 40 MB of square inch is approximately equivalent to a music CD. But on the brighter side, more number of layers of dots means more memory capacity.

Another feather in the cap for this tiny masterpiece is the fact that it is essentially fireproof. The company had apparently heated the glass chip up to a temperature of 1000 degree Celsius and still was able to recover the information etched on the glass chip. Also, it is unaffected by radio waves and is still incorruptible when immersed in water. But, being a “glass” chip, it is breakable (though quartz is pretty hard to break).

This technology is practically applicable in storing information in government agencies or in places like museums. It is a fascinating way to archive historical and cultural and even religious data and I am sure that it’s going to be a scintillating battle between the spacious (but far less reliable) external hard drives and these tiny incorruptible and nearly indestructible glass chips.
